Tik Tok claims it will be banning 'MLMs' and other dissimulated pyramid scams.

TikTok Is Banning MLMs And Pyramid Schemes (buzzfeednews.com)

TikTok announced updates to its community guidelines this week, which include a new policy against content related to 'multilevel marketing,' Ponzi, and other "get rich quick" schemes.

In a statement to BuzzFeed News, a spokesperson for the company said it has "multiple measures in place to reduce the spread of misleading content, including content that aims to deceive people for financial gain."

On Tuesday, TikTok added to its "frauds and scams" guidelines a ban on "content that depicts or promotes phishing," "content that depicts or promotes Ponzi, multi-level marketing, or pyramid schemes," and "content that depicts or promotes investment schemes with promise of high returns, fixed betting, or any other types of scams."

The company hopes to protect users who are vulnerable to financial abuse.

  1. While on the surface this looks like a good thing. It is only good IF Tik Tok takes action. When this came out, MLM coach, Ray Higdon, started offering a Tik Tok course. John and Nadya Melton, who are with Modere but formerly were with Vemma, also did a response Facebook Live about this issue. Upon hearing Tik Tok's community guideline changes, my stance was that "they would find a way." MLM will not go slinking into that goodnight. They will just do things differently. So what happens now when you make a report about MLM? NOTHING. Each time myself and others have reported videos/accounts this is the statement we receive from Tik Tok. "We found that the reported content doesn't violate our Community Guidelines. We understand that you may not want to see this type of content and you have the option to block the account that posted it." So Tik Tok what exactly IS against your guidelines? How are you going to protect your young audience from people who are aligned with MLM? Your platform is LITTERED with MLMers. What are you actually going to do to shut them down? I doubt they will actually do anything. Just more lip service.

    1. Thanks Alanda. I am altering the title of this post to 'TikTok claims it will be bannning MLMs and other dissimulated pyramid scams,' because we've yet to recover any evidence that this claim is true.
